2020 Nissan Pathfinder vs. 2020 Toyota Highlander

The newly designed Pathfinder reveals yet another reason to own this legendary mid-size crossover. With a slight increase in frame size, it adds a big dose of passenger comfort to its palette. It will comfortably seat seven friends and family with flexible seating.

The Pathfinder is not alone in the mid-size crossover segment. Competitors such as the Toyota Highlander attempt to de-throne the Pathfinder each model year. Here, we compare both to help illustrate how the Pathfinder stands.

The 2020 Nissan Pathfinder has an all-terrain drivetrain

The Pathfinder and Highlander both feature 3.5L six-cylinder engines with horsepower and torque that only have a slight difference. The gas-only engines have nearly identical fuel efficiency ratings, but the Pathfinder operates in 4WD, giving it an advantage. The Highlander's hybrid engine has 40 less horsepower than the Pathfinder.

The differences between both vehicles become more apparent in their power distribution systems. The Pathfinder's intelligent 4x4 system provides all-season traction and efficiency. Drivers can switch between 2WD and 4WD on the fly to meet the needs of the road. The Highlander only offers FWD or AWD, and you have to purchase separate vehicles to experience both.

The power of 4WD also emerges when it's time to hook up a trailer and recreational craft, camper or other valuable cargo. The Pathfinder hauls an impressive 2,722 kg, much more than the Highlander's limit of around 2,260 kg. On top of it, it is nearly double the amount of the Highlander Hybrid. So much for hybrid power.

The 2020 Nissan Pathfinder has more volume

Passengers have more room to move around in the Pathfinder than the Highlander. Front row occupants enjoy more front head, leg and shoulder room. Middle row passengers stretch out with more leg and shoulder room, and the third row has more room in all dimensions.

The Pathfinder offers exclusive amenities not available in the Highlander. These include driver restriction features, a luggage rack to carry along more fun, and rear seat audio controls to keep passengers happy. There are many other features to discover in the Nissan Pathfinder.
